Jayden’s thrives with newfound independence
February 5, 2024
At the young age of 18, Jayden Smith-Snowden has already experienced a lot of struggles in her life. Growing up in foster care due to a risk of homelessness, Jayden has long strived for a different life.
“My mum was homeless, my dad was homeless and my sister is currently homeless,” Jayden says. “I’m not going to let that happen. It’s really important to me that I keep housing and that I keep a roof over my head.”
Jayden lives with autism, but thanks to her new Aspire Hub supported accommodation in west Brisbane, she now has the freedom, and the supports, to explore her passions.
“It’s pretty cool being able to get that independence because when I was living with my foster parents I was in the middle of nowhere and I don’t have a car,” Jayden says.
“So thankfully I moved out and I can be an adult with support workers that have a car and can take me to places I need to go.
“It’s really convenient that it’s just a 10-minute walk from the train station. I’m very travel savvy.”
To pass the time growing up in residential care, Jayden explored her passion for crocheting – a love she now shares with others.
“I taught myself how to crochet. I really like it. I’m also an avid collector,” Jayden says. “I like having that constant companionship and being able to talk to people. It also gives me something to do, like I taught one of the ladies how to crochet. I like having people around.”
Jayden’s new home is a unique model of shared living for NDIS participants. Developed by registered provider, Aspire Hub, the residence features 15 self-contained apartments – each fully furnished with its own ensuite bathroom, kitchenette and living area.
To promote social connection, there is also shared dining area and a communal kitchen, meaning there’s lots of opportunities to mingle with others, while also providing independence.
“It gives me the independence back that I had stripped,” Jayden says. “Honestly, one of the best places you could be is one of these houses because all the supports are here, everyone’s great and you get to deal with amazing people. It’s been fantastic.”
With her newfound confidence, and all the right supports in place to empower Jayden to live her best life, Jayden has recently completed studies to achieve a Certificate II in Engineering Pathways – a goal she has been working hard towards. We couldn’t be more proud of all she has, and continues to achieve.
