Is Supported Independent Living right for you? Find out here
June 6, 2023
Whether you’re looking at NDIS-funded support options for yourself or for a loved one, it’s likely that Support Independent Living (SIL) is something you’ve come across or considered. SIL is designed to assist individuals with everyday tasks, but it also helps boost confidence and builds skills, which is incredibly empowering for those living with disabilities. Let’s take a closer look at this support and unpack a few common questions like ‘What is Supported Independent Living?’ and detail what’s included and who might be eligible.
Let’s start with the basics!
What is Supported Independent Living?
According to the NDIS, Supported Independent Living (SIL), is a type of in-home support that helps NDIS participants live in their homes. This support can be delivered within most homes or shared NDIS housing. The aim of this support is to help you live as independently as possible while building your skills and working towards your goals, making it an important support for empowering individuals to live independently.
Who is SIL for?
Generally, SIL is considered for individuals with high support needs, like those who require help at home throughout the day, 7 days a week (including overnight support).
If you’re not sure what support is right for you, it’s a good idea to check the NDIS’ home and living supports to see which option suits you or reach out to us either online or by phone.
What does SIL include?
SIL funding can’t be used for rent or everyday living expenses like food. Instead, it’s designed to help with daily tasks like cleaning, nutrition, or medication management, it can also cover support to go shopping.
How do I access SIL?
SIL requires pre-approval from the NDIS. The NDIS will check your eligibility based on a number of factors including your age and how much support you require in your home each day. You can read more about the NDIS SIL guidelines here. If you’re not sure how to read your plan to check if SIL is included, or you’d like to know how to change your current NDIS plan, you can reach out to us.
