NDIS individual living options for Gold Coast residents
August 1, 2022
NDIS Individual Living Options (ILO) are a fantastic package of supports for Gold Coast residents who want to live as independently as possible. Unlike other supports that are typically delivered in shared disability accommodation, you can receive ILO in the comfort of the home you’re already living in, if it’s deemed appropriate by the NDIS for you to do so.
In this blog, we explore what NDIS Individual Living Options are, who may be eligible for this type of funding, and how people with disabilities on the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Brisbane and beyond can access them through Aspire Hub.
What are NDIS Individual Living Options?
NDIS Individual Living Options are flexible support packages that are customisable to you and your unique needs. Unlike other NDIS housing such as Specialist Disability Accommodation, ILO is a package of supports rather than the type of home you live in. This means that you can access this arrangement in the house of your choosing, so if you live with family or friends and it’s appropriate for you to do so, you can receive ILO in the comfort of that home.
Each ILO arrangement is unique to your needs, but according to the NDIS guidelines, your package may include:
· Help with making decisions like where you want to live and what supports you need to make that happen
· Personal care, including help to shop, cook or pay bills
· Help to set up and manage your own home
· Help to build your independence
· Building and maintaining connection with others
· Help with making day to day decisions
· Support to manage your emotions or behaviour
· Unpaid volunteers, neighbours or carers who help you on a regular basis
· People who you call to help you when you need it (on-call)
· Training for the people who support you.
Because it is a package of supports, funding for ILO cannot be used for expenses like your rent or mortgage repayments.
Who is suitable for NDIS Individual Living Options?
Individual Living Options are an alternative to Supported Independent Living (SIL). The difference between the two is SIL involves paid personal supports and is most commonly used in a shared living arrangement, while ILO is more of a tailored approach that works with other funded supports and services you receive, as well as the help you might already get from your support network. You cannot receive funding for ILO and SIL at the same time.
ILO might work best for you if:
· you’re 18 or over
· you require at least 6 hours of daily help at home
· you don’t need daily registered nursing care or frequent support overnight
· you’re ready to explore alternative options for your home and living needs.
If you’re not already receiving funding for an ILO package but think you should be, get in touch with your NDIS plan manager and speak to them about how this support package could help you achieve your goals.
